The Flannan Isles keepers disappear
Three lighthouse keepers vanish from a Scottish island
When a relief vessel arrived at the Flannan Isles lighthouse, all three keepers were gone and the lighthouse was empty. Most investigators suspect they were swept away by a huge wave.
The lighthouse stands on Eilean Mor, the largest of the Flannan Isles, about 20 miles west of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It first shone in late 1899. The missing men were generally named as James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald MacArthur.
The supply ship Hesperus reached the island on December 26, 1900, but the light had apparently been dark for some days. The last log entries are usually dated to about December 15. A Northern Lighthouse Board superintendent investigated soon after and concluded the men were probably swept off the landing area by a large wave while securing equipment.
Many dramatic details in later retellings, including a laid table and an overturned chair, are not supported by the official report and appear to have been added by writers. The 1912 poem Flannan Isle by Wilfrid Gibson helped spread the legend.
No bodies were found, so the explanation remains an inference from the evidence, not a proven fact.
The lighthouse was later automated, and the island is now uninhabited, visited mainly by seabirds and occasional maintenance crews.
