Narendra Modi Stadium

~132,000

Largest cricket stadium by capacity (Ahmedabad, India)

Estimated Stadiums · Verified 2026-10-30 · WWV-BU-009

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad holds about 132,000 spectators, the biggest cricket ground in the world. It was rebuilt on the site of the old Motera stadium, inaugurated in 2020 and renamed in 2021 and hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final.

Capacity figures differ by source. Pyongyang's Rungrado May Day Stadium is listed at 114,000 or higher, so the title of 'largest stadium of any sport' is disputed.

Context

The Ahmedabad ground is often called by its former name, Motera. The original stadium dated from the early 1980s and held far fewer spectators, and it was demolished and rebuilt as a much larger arena during the late 2010s. It was renamed after the Indian prime minister in 2021, and it hosted the final of the 2023 men's Cricket World Cup.

The capacity of about 132,000 is the figure usually given by organisers and cricket bodies. Stadium capacities are rarely exact: they change with seating layouts, safety rules and media or VIP areas, and different sources round them differently, which is why the figure is marked as an estimate.

Cricket grounds are only part of the picture. The Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang is listed with a capacity of around 114,000 in many sources, while some other sports venues, such as large American college football stadiums, hold well over 100,000. Which venue is 'the biggest stadium in the world' therefore depends on the sport and on whose capacity figure is used.
