In September 2022 Lithuanian ultrarunner Aleksandr Sorokin ran 319.614 km (198.6 miles) in 24 hours at the European 24-hour championships, which works out at a pace of about 4.5 minutes per kilometre for a full day.

Track and road ultra records are ratified by the International Association of Ultrarunners, and rarely change from year to year.

Context

Sorokin's distance was achieved at the European 24 Hours Championships in Albi, France, in September 2022. He completed 319.614 km on a short looped circuit, passing 200 miles. His marathon-equivalent pace works out to about 4 minutes 30 seconds per kilometre sustained for an entire day, which is far faster than most runners can hold for even a single hour.

The result broke the earlier record of 303.506 km, set by Yiannis Kouros of Greece in 1997. Kouros's mark had stood for 25 years and was considered one of the most durable in ultrarunning.

Distances in timed races are counted by electronic chips and lap counters and then verified by officials, with the course measured precisely beforehand. Records for these events are ratified by athletics bodies such as the International Association of Ultrarunners and World Athletics. Because only a few elite events host such attempts, the mark is seldom threatened. Because the attempt took place on a fixed loop, officials could count each lap and add the final partial lap to reach the exact total.
