Answer

About 15 to 20 times

Blinking drops when you stare at screens.

Context

Reported averages vary slightly by source and method. Cleveland Clinic cites roughly 14 to 17 blinks per minute for most adults, while the widely repeated range is 15 to 20, and research studies using video or sensors find individual rates ranging from under 10 to over 20 per minute. Rates depend on the person, the task and the lighting, so any single number is an approximation.

Each spontaneous blink lasts roughly 100 to 150 milliseconds, so the eyes are closed for only a few percent of waking time. Blinking spreads the tear film across the cornea, clears dust and cell debris, and helps bring oxygen and nutrients to the surface of the eye. A corneal reflex also triggers a blink when something approaches the eye quickly. These spontaneous blinks differ from voluntary ones and from reflex blinks.

Blink rate falls during demanding visual tasks. Working on a screen can lower it to as few as five per minute, according to Cleveland Clinic, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology links reduced blinking to dry, tired eyes during computer use. Rates rise during conversation and when someone is tired or anxious.

Researchers also use blink rate as a loose indicator of attention and of dopamine activity in the brain, and they have found that people tend to blink at natural breaks in what they are watching or reading. These links are statistical tendencies and not diagnostic tools.
