English
Most widely spoken language, native and second-language speakers
English has about 1.5 billion speakers in total, most of them using it as a second language. That tops every other language.
Rankings of language size depend on what is counted. Native (first-language, or L1) speakers learned the language from birth, while second-language (L2) speakers picked it up later. English has far more L2 speakers than any other language, which is why it leads on total speakers even though several languages have more native speakers.
Ethnologue, a language-research publisher, reports that English is used in well over a hundred countries, a much wider spread than Mandarin. Historians usually link that reach to British colonial expansion, followed by the global influence of American media, business and science.
Totals of around 1.5 billion are estimates built from census data, surveys and modeling. Different publishers set different thresholds for how well someone must speak a language to be included, so published figures can differ by hundreds of millions. Treat the number as a rough guide rather than an exact head count.
Because the figures change as populations grow and as more people study English in school, the exact total is less important than the pattern: English is the world's most widely shared language, but it is not the one with the most native speakers.
