Mandarin Chinese
Most native speakers of any language
Mandarin has about 940 million native speakers, more than any other language, and well over a billion speakers overall.
Mandarin is the largest of the Chinese language varieties and is the basis of the standard spoken form used in mainland China and Taiwan. Because it is spoken natively across a huge area of northern and southwestern China, it leads every ranking of native (first-language) speakers.
The headline figure depends on how languages are grouped. Many linguists treat Mandarin, Cantonese, Wu, Min and others as separate varieties that are not mutually understandable, while Chinese official usage often calls them dialects of one language. Counting only Mandarin gives a number near 940 million native speakers, but estimates vary by source and year.
Mandarin is not the leader once second-language speakers are added. English passes it on total speakers because so many people around the world have learned English as an additional language, whereas Mandarin is mostly spoken by people who grew up with it.
For learners and travelers, it also matters that written Chinese characters are shared across these varieties, which helps explain why China treats them as one language family in everyday life even though speakers of different varieties may not understand each other when talking.
