Which country is also a whole continent?
Mainland Australia is often grouped with nearby islands as the continent of Oceania or Australia.
The answer depends on how continents are defined, and no body sets one official list. The most common English-language model counts seven continents, and in that model Australia is the smallest, with a land area of roughly 7.7 million square kilometers. A continent is usually described as a large, continuous, distinct landmass, and Australia is the only one not joined to another by land, being surrounded by ocean on all sides.
The country, the Commonwealth of Australia, was formed in 1901 and covers the mainland, Tasmania and many smaller islands. The continent in the geological sense is somewhat larger than the country because the continental shelf also carries New Guinea, which is politically separate; geologists sometimes call the combined shelf region Sahul. Therefore the country and the continent overlap heavily but are not identical.
Some regions teach a six- or five-continent model instead, or group Australia with New Zealand and Pacific islands as 'Oceania', which is a region rather than a single landmass. Because of these competing conventions, the statement is best read as 'Australia is both a sovereign country and the continental landmass of the same name in the common seven-continent model', not as a universal rule.
