Which two countries are doubly landlocked, meaning every neighbor is also landlocked?
To reach an ocean from either country you must cross at least two borders.
Counting landlocked states is easy; the doubly landlocked label is stricter. A country qualifies only if every one of its neighbors is itself landlocked, so a traveler must cross at least two international borders to reach a coast. Geographers list just two cases: Liechtenstein, bordered by Austria and Switzerland, and Uzbekistan, bordered by Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Neither country has a coast to build trade around, so each has tied its economy to neighbors. Liechtenstein uses a customs union with Switzerland, belongs to the European Free Trade Association and is in the Schengen area, and it imports most of its energy through Swiss networks. Uzbekistan lost its easy routes to ports when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, since earlier sea access ran through other Soviet republics; its exports now travel by rail and road across several borders.
A common misconception is that Uzbekistan 'became' landlocked in 1991. It never had a coastline of its own; independence simply turned internal Soviet transit into international transit. Note also that Central Asia's Aral Sea, shared by Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, is a lake, not an ocean connection, and the Caspian Sea does not touch Uzbekistan at all.
